From Policy to the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Behavior Management and Compliance Issues

The 5th Annual Conference on Health, Disability, and the Law, From Policy to the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Behavior Management and Compliance Issues, was held on June 8, 2007 at the IU School of Law-Indianapolis in the Walter S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health.

The conference began with a welcome from Heather McCabe, MSW, JD

followed by introductory Remarks by Rupert Boneham

of Indianapolis-based Rupert's Kids Foundation.

The keynote speaker for this year's conference was Elaine Alfano,

Policy Analyst for the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. Ms. Alfano presented Behavior Management, Classroom Strategies, and Policy Implications.

Russell Skiba, Ph.D., Professor in Counseling and Educational Psychology at IU School of Education

spoke about the Safe & Responsive Schools Project, which he co-directs. Joining Dr. Skiba was Clarissa Snapp, MS, MA, (Fig. 5) Director of the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy, who presented on Indiana State Laws Regarding Bullying.

Following lunch, there was a parent panel

featuring Ms. April Hanaway (mother of three children with ADHD) and Ms. Debra Marburger (mother of an 11-year-old daughter with autism) and headed by Lann Thompson, Ph.D.

Cynthia Jackson, Ph.D.,

a behavioral specialist with Indianapolis Public Schools, presented Practical Strategies for Behavior Management and Compliance.

Mental Health and Educational Law Update 2006 was a panel presentation by Alexandra Curlin, JD

of Curlin and Associates and Dee Kempson, MSW of the IDOE Office of Student Services. Joining them on this panel were Richelle Greaves, MSW, LCSW, Student Assistance Consultant, MSD Pike Township, Pamela L. June, Ph.D., HSPP, June Psychological and Consulting Services, and Ms. Laurice Varnau, parent.
