Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
The purpose of the Riley Child Development Center Interdisciplinary Leadership Training Program is to prepare graduate and post graduate professionals from eighteen health, education and related disciplines to deliver high quality services which result in improved systems of care for persons with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities (including mental retardation, neurodegenerative and acquired neurological disorders, and multiple handicaps) and their families. The interdisciplinary leadership training program derives its effectiveness from a core faculty which includes team members representing audiology, health administration, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, parents of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, pediatric dentistry, physical therapy, psychology, public health social work, speech/language pathology, child psychiatry, pediatric neurology, behavioral pediatrics, medical genetics, ethics, law, and special education. All training activities occur within this interdisciplinary framework of exemplary services, research, and advocacy which ensures that trainees develop skills for effective participation in the interdisciplinary team process. Furthermore, this framework increases trainees' awareness and ability to appropriately assimilate the contributions of professions from the eighteen disciplines in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities. In addition, the RCDC program provides a singular educational opportunity for trainees to share responsibilities with professionals of other disciplines in the management and evaluation of service delivery systems.
An interdisciplinary core training curriculum is provided through:
1) Interdisciplinary training and service clinics.
2) Community-based experiences.
3) Core course consisting of conferences with faculty, didactic courses, and seminars.
4) Research experience and methods.
5) Policy analysis and advocacy.
6) Self-paced learning modules.
